Blundellsands United Reformed Church to be Converted into Luxury Apartments by Winter Melia Developments and Falconer Chester Hall

Blundellsands United Reformed Church will be transformed into luxury apartments after planning permission was granted to Falconer Chester Hall on behalf of Winter Melia Developments.

The Grade II listed building will be converted into nine luxury apartments in a project that will bring the location back to life after previous tenants, such as small businesses, and local care schemes relocated due to the redevelopment plans.

The church is in a beautiful area and is placed on Warren Road, on the junction with The Serpentine, facing the Key Park, which is a gated private park and is the location of Blundellsands Lawn Tennis Club.

It is just a two-minute walk to Crosby and Blundellsands train station, providing quick access to the popular bars, eateries, shops and supermarkets on Liverpool Rd, in Waterloo.

The church and future luxury apartments are also just a couple of minutes from Crosby Beach, and the Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, as well as Antony Gormley’s famous ‘Other Place’ installations.

Drone Footage of Blundellsands United Reformed Church

Blundellsands United Reformed Church was captured in a brilliant sunset by EFP Drone Footage in 2023.

The clip below shows the church as the sun beams through its tower, along with the Tennis Club and private Key Park, with Liverpool Docks, the River Mersey, and Crosby Beach in the distance.

The clips of Blundellsands United Reform Church are from an automated drone flight that was designed by EFP Drone Footage in 2023.

This flight can be safely repeated at any time using the DJI Mini 3 Pro, Mini 3, or DJI Mini 4 Pro, which are all sub-250-gram drones.

The automated drone flight of the Blundellsands United Reform Church was also good in being able to allow me to generate a 3D Gaussian Splat of the building and its surrounding area.

This can be seen below and is interactive.

3D Model of Blundellsands United Reformed Church

A 3d Model of the Blundellsands United Reformed Church building can be seen below.

This was generated using a video of an automated flight at the location of the church.

This flight was not planned for a 3D model but the results are still surprisingly good as an example of what can be done, and some fine-tuning of the flight would allow for more detail in the buildings by doing more passes at different altitudes and with the gimbal pointing at different locations in flight.

History of Blundellsands United Reformed Church Building

Blundellsands United Reformed church is a Grade II listed building with a First World War Memorial window. The church opened between 1904-5 and was originally a Presbyterian Church until 1972 when Welsh Congregationalists amalgamated with the Presbyterian Church to form the United Reform Church.

Winter Melia and Falconer Chester Hall comment on securing new project

Robert Brym, associate director at Falconer Chester Hall’s Liverpool studio, said: “A fundamental element of the success of the conversion of the church is to retain the inherent character.

“Careful consideration of the design for the scheme has ensured the original features are incorporated into the apartments.

“The proposed layouts protect existing stain glass windows and allow for natural light to flood the spacious rooms. The new floors will be supported by an independent structure that does not compromise the existing fabric of the church. The conversion of this Grade II-listed church will secure its future over the long term.”

Phil Melia, director, Winter Melia, said: “Winter Melia are specialists in the conversion of listed buildings into modern living spaces.

“The United Reformed Church presented us with a unique opportunity. Working closely with FCH on the design resulted in the creation of a luxurious, low density scheme.

“The spacious duplex/triplex apartments are in keeping with the demand of the location, appealing to a wider audience, including families and those wishing to downsize.”
